Happy Turkey Day

November 25, 2009 by esalstrand

While everyone else in this town has gone somewhere for Thanksgiving, my volleyball team and I are still here. We are having a team dinner tonight and than tomorrow we get to spend time on our own. Some of my teammates have family coming in town so at least that’s something to look forward to on this lonely Thanksgiving. I don’t understand how some media already has Christmas movies and songs playing; Thanksgiving hasn’t even technically come yet. I think that once Thanksgiving is over we can unleash the Christmas spirit! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

First Marijuana Coffee Shop

November 20, 2009 by esalstrand

The state of Oregon has about 21,00 patients that are registered to use Marijuana. In Portland, Oregon, the new coffee shop named Cannabis Cafe, is the first to make available cannabis legally. They are only allowed to sell it to people with a medical registration card though. This is very interesting to me and seems to be the start of a slipping slope on this subject. I don’t understand marijuana and why people like it. All I know is that it is illegal for a reason and maybe it should stay that way. I’ve done no research on it so my opinion isn’t justified by any means.

“Severe Soccer”

November 7, 2009 by esalstrand

The University of New Mexico needs some help from their PR department after the incident of one of the University’s women soccer players physically crossed the line against their opponent. The player threw punches and pulled the hair of an opponent knocking her to the ground. I am embarrassed for that girl, her family, teammates, coaches and the University of New Mexico.

Racism in Mississippi

October 30, 2009 by esalstrand

In my social identity class, we have been discussing racism in the South. I’ve been learning how eminent racism still appears to be. According to a documentary that one of my classmates saw, Morgan Freeman traveled back to his hometown and the high school in which he attended was still to this day having a segregated prom. Freeman offered to pay for the prom in condition that it would no longer be segregated. The students liked this idea but the parents saw it as “dangerous.” A professor from USM, Curtis Austin, believes that it’s the media’s fault for the stereotypes of Mississippi’s’ prevalent racism. I don’t think the media should be blamed when they are merely portraying the truth. Maybe racism isn’t everywhere in Mississippi, but for there to still be a segregated prom speaks for the whole state in my opinion. There are citizens in Mississippi that could stand up and change that, but obviously it’s not that important since it is still happening. If Mississippi wants the media to back off, than they’ve got some changes to make! Unfortunately, racism is inevitable in many locations of our country, but to hear of a prom in the twentieth century that is segregated is absolutely ridiculous.

Happy Halloween

October 30, 2009 by esalstrand

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and I can not wait to dress up. I think I am going to be an indian princess. I hope that wherever I find a job my company will allow us to dress up if Halloween falls on a workday and if it is on the weekend a Halloween party with the company would be fun. It’s the one day of a few in which we can dress up and be completely silly, or serious depending on our costume choice. Happy Halloween everyone! Hope you get to do the Monster Mash sometime on Saturday!

Caroline Wozniacki

October 23, 2009 by esalstrand

So apparently the tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki, hurt her hamstring during a match and her father told her in Polish to retire so that she could make it to the next round. People watching the match could hear her father saying this through the microphones set up and right after his comments, many bets were placed on the match. Because of that, Caroline was questioned for fixing the match. I think it’s sad that while this player was simply injured, people assume that she’s intentionally retiring the game for other reasons.

Vampire Fad

October 16, 2009 by esalstrand

I feel like lately there’s been a ton of vampire stories hitting the movie and television scenes. Even though they are all different, they’re very similar to one another. They differ in the intended audience though. I do like the idea of dating a vampire; it’s kind of romantic in a very strange way. “Twilight” is much less vulgar than another vampire series “True Blood.” I attempted to watch the first season on DVD but I was a bit turned off. “True Blood” was almost like a cheap porn.

Public Relations

October 16, 2009 by esalstrand

I really enjoyed meeting with my group and discussing our next project. I’m excited to work in the Public Relations world but I hope that I’ll get to work in teams wherever I end up. I just love sitting together and brainstorming. It’s amazing all the possibilities a group can come up with. I like working individually but working in groups is more my style. :)

Twitter

September 25, 2009 by esalstrand

I think it’s so weird that people are so crazy about Twitter. I don’t understand what the hype is because I feel like it’s so similar to Facebook. I did sign up for an account because of this class and I truthfully didn’t like it all. It is kind of cool that we are able to follow celebrities, but I personally don’t have an interest in what the celebs are doing. Can someone help me understand Twitter? :)

First blog ever!

September 14, 2009 by esalstrand

So this is my first blog ever and I’m not going to lie, I only got it because of our APR class. I’m not the type to post my feelings, thoughts, or ideas online. I do use Facebook but only to keep in touch with my closest friends and family. I used Twitter for the first time the other day and I honestly don’t see a point in it. I feel like it’s going to be exactly like Facebook. Ohwelll, I guess we have to adjust or adapt to new things. I’m excited to graduate this spring and find a job in the public relations industry, but I am very nervous too. I’ve heard so many mixed things about pr and I just want to be happy with the career I find. I don’t even have a clue where to start looking. Any suggestions?
